ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES/JOB TASKS

1. 55%

Performs construction and installation tasks to support the deployment of fiber optic, coaxial, and copper networks. Tasks may include but are not limited to assist with the installation of telecom cables in underground and aerial environments; excavating trenches, handholes, and pits for conduit and cable placement; place conduit, pull cable and install pedestals, cabinets or other OSP equipment; operate hand tools, power tools and light construction equipment; assist the Underground Foreman to complete OSP drops, mainline builds, and damage repairs; maintain a clean, safe, and organized job site; and communicate consistently and professionally with crew, customers, and public. Monitored by the Engineering Supervisor by direct observation and daily reporting.

 

2. 25%

Supports the Underground team in preparing project sites to ensure safe and accurate construction activities. Tasks may include but are not limited to locating and potholing all planned crossings of utilities both public and private; verify locate accuracy and report discrepancies or damage to Underground Foreman for documentation and repair; set up traffic control and direct traffic flow in accordance with local and state DOT regulations; and participate in daily safety meetings, job briefings, and hazard reviews. Monitored by the Engineering Supervisor by direct observation and reports.

 

3. 10%

Assists with equipment operation and ensures proper site cleanup and restoration upon completion of projects. Tasks may include but are not limited to assist with operating heavy equipment under supervision; load, unload, state, and organize materials, tools, and equipment; conduct backfilling, compaction, grading, and restoration of disturbed areas. Monitored by the Engineering Supervisor via direct observation.

 

4. 10%

Demonstrate commitment to safety procedures and compliance with all company, OSHA, and industry standards; attend safety meetings and trainings as scheduled; use required PPE at all times, report hazards, unsafe conditions, or incidents immediately to the Underground Foreman; follow proper procedures excavation, equipment use and working around buried cables. Monitored by the Engineering Supervisor via safety audits and direct observation.

 

(Continually looks for new and improved ways of completing the above functions. Other tasks as assigned by supervisor will be performed in order to address unexpected situations or needs that may arise.)

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Telecommunications Construction Laborer supports the installation, construction, and maintenance of telecommunications infrastructure, including underground and aerial fiber optic and copper cable systems. This role involves physical labor, operation of construction equipment, and adherence to safety standards while working as part of a field construction crew.
This position requires problem solving and collaborating with a team.

LATITUDE:

Most duties are defined and consistent from day to day. Problem solving is accomplished in conjunction with others and consistently reviewed. All purchase requests are referred to supervisor.

IMPACT OF POSITION:

Errors are easily detected and usually impact a single department. They may result in moderate or substantial monetary effect and have a high probability of resulting in a loss of customers. Errors could affect operating costs.

CUSTOMER SERVICE/INTERACTION:

Daily phone, personal, and some written contact with all employees and customers. Monthly contact with vendors.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS & REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION:

Required: High School Diploma or GED

EXPERIENCE:

Preferred: Previous experience in telecommunications, construction, utilities or similar field.
